A new project using scanned and digitally manipulated simple collographs. Firstly the shape of a bird is drawn and carefully cut from textured anaglypta wallpaper. Black oil based etching ink is pushed into the recesses of the wall paper shape with a plastic card (intaglio) and wiped back with tarlatan/scrim. Care must be taken as the shape is quite fragile. Lemon yellow oil based etching ink is rolled out on glass and rolled over the top surface (relief). The inked shape is then run under an etching press onto heavy cartridge paper between two pieces of newsprint to protect the press blankets.

The image is then scanned into Photoshop Elements. A further scan is also taken of the “ghost like” image left behind on the newsprint by the back of the wall paper shape as it went through the press. Both images are then manipulated- mainly with the magic eraser tool. They are selected and layered on top of a solid orange filled shape of the original bird shape.
